Contest Updates (
Contest Updates are used for three different things:
1) Provide alterations and/or deviations from the state technical standards.
2) Provide additional important information about contests.
3) Provide reminders and/or emphasize information listed elsewhere.
Reminder: All contestants will turn in a digital copy of their 1-page resume for scoring purposes. If a contest does not require a resume, requires an additional (hard-copy) of a resume, or requires a more in depth resume / portfolio, it will be listed in the update for that contest.
Reminder: All contestants will be responsible for taking the Professional Development Test during the provided testing window of March 2-10, 2023 using the testing guidelines provided on the Testing, Resumes, & Forms page. If a contest does not require a contestant to take this test, it will be listed in the update for that contest. A study guide for this test is provided by nationals and is located on the Testing, Resumes, & Forms page. The test is written by nationals.
Reminder: All contestants will be responsible for taking the Contest Written Test during the provided testing window of March 2-10, 2023 using the testing guidelines provided on the Testing, Resumes, & Forms page. If a contest does not have a written test, it will be listed in the update for that contest. There is no study guide provided for contests unless provided in that contest updates. Otherwise, one should concentrate on the Standards & Competencies listed in the contest technical standards. All tests, with the exception of state only competitions, are written by the national technical chair and/or national committees.
Reminder: Proper competition clothing is required for all contests. This is a very strict policy for safety and professional reasons. The technical chair, judges, state board member, or selected member of an inspection team may deduct points for clothing violations and may disqualify contestants if it presents a safety hazard. Technical chairs and judges may allow changing of clothing after initial inspection if it is required for the contest.
If a contest has no updates, it will say "No updates at this time." Some contests will have no updates leading up to the conference, others will have many updates. It is the responsibility of the competitor and advisor to check this page frequently and be aware of any updates listed here and anywhere within the conference page or tabs leading from it. This page is updates as information comes in from the technical chair and committees or other sources. If you leave this page open, you may need to refresh it. As with all pages on our side, it is better viewed in desktop mode.

Action Skills
This competition is only open to students that qualify under ADA. Prompt(s) will be provided on-site at the orientation meeting. Students will be provided with a USB drive for their project. A time frame will be provided to complete the project. The entire contest will be completed and project turned in by the provided time (all on same day).
Contestants should follow the equipment list within the technical standards and be prepared to complete the project, using the prompt, on-site at the Greenville Convention Center. Additional instructions regarding requirements and project details will be provided at the orientation meeting.

The Technical Standards for each category are the same.

Commercial sUAS Drone
Competitors will take the written test for this competition ON-SITE, not through the online testing system. They will still take the PDP test online during the provided testing window. Contest test will be done using the Cross Flight Learning Management System online at the contest site.

Bring a laptop or tablet that can connect to Wi-Fi to take an onsite test. This is one laptop PER competitor, not per team.

Flights will occur indoors, however, due to the proximity of the Greenville Convention Center to the Greenville Downtown Airport, competitors will need to make sure they know hot to unlock their drones to fly in that airspace. They will need to receive verification to fly in a controlled airspace. Ensure this ability PRIOR to arrival for contest.

Crime Scene Investigation
Teams will go through a series of stations. These may include, but are not limited to: evidence interpretation, evidence collection, evidence packaging, photo logs, narratives, crime scene sketches, processing a crime scene. Teams will need a camera for taking photographs, no phones may be used for this.
If a school has more teams competing than CSI Kits/Boxes, they may share a box and have additional materials within the contest area to restock in between scenes, however, technical chairs, judges, or designees may inspect kits prior to use to maintain integrity. Any exchange of kits between teams must be observed by the technical chair, judge, or designee. Any actions that are or may be interpreted as lacking integrity may result in penalty up to disqualification. If a school is utilizing less kits/boxes than teams registered, please notify the state director so that the technical chair may be made aware in advance.
ADVISORS: There will be an additional meeting following the CSI Orientation for ADVISOR ONLY. This will include both CSI and CJ advisors. It will occur at the contest area and will be led by Donald Lanier from the SC Bar Association. Please be sure you stick around for this portion.

Criminal Justice
Contestants will go through a series of stations. These may include, but are not limited to: Interviews, Narrative Writing, Evidence Collection, Traffic Enforcement, Common Calls for Service, Medical Emergencies, etc. Contest will involve scenario based situations.
ADVISORS: There will be an additional meeting following the CJ Orientation for ADVISOR ONLY. This will include both CJ and CSI advisors. It will occur at the contest area and will be led by Donald Lanier from the SC Bar Association. Please be sure you stick around for this portion.

Criminal Justice Quiz Bowl
Teams may be made up of 3 to 5 contestants. 3 of these contestants must only be registered for this competition. 2 additional contestants may be competing in a separate contest, however, they may only assist in this contest if they are complete with their other contest. All contestants must be enrolled in a program with a career focus on the criminal justice career field. If an advisor has 2 students competing in a separate contest but are being used for this contest as well, they must provide the names of the students to the state director prior to March 14, 2023.

Customer Service
A holding room will be set aside for this contest. To maintain integrity of the contest, but also with the understanding of student personal needs, times will be provided at the orientation in which students should report to the holding room. This room will be proctored and will have multiple competitors in the room at a time. It is highly suggested that competitors take care of any personal needs prior to entering and also arrive early.

Extemporaneous Speaking
The reference materials used in this competition can be found in the SkillsUSA Educational store which include the SkillsUSA Member Handbook and SkillsUSA Framework Fundamentals Cards. No outside materials may be brought in to the contest area by contestants.
A holding room may be utilized if necessary. If it is utilized, it will be proctored properly and will be mentioned at the orientation meeting. If not holding room is used, it will not be mentioned. If a time for reporting to the contest area is given, please arrive 15 minutes prior to the contestant's given time in case the judge(s) are ready early. Failure to arrive by the report time may result in penalty or disqualification.

Equipment Needs: Competitors should provide their own Firefighting PPE, pocket mask (CPR), and MUST bring a Hard Copy of their resume to go along with their already turned in digital copy of their resume. Need 3 copies of resume for judges.

Hair Braiding - Fantasy
The theme for 2023 is "Fairy Tale". Competitors should base their work on the theme and be able to articulate to the judges how it ties in to the theme.
Contestants may use items to support their style (example: pip cleaners, etc.).
Contestants may use other things in the hair to help decorate for their fantasy style, it does not have to be solely braids.
Contestants may have up to 50% pre-braided prior to competition start.

Job Interview
Contestants will be placed in a holding room or area. This holding room or area may also be a holding room for additional competitions. If the number of competitors reaches certain thresholds, they will be given time slots to return to the holding room so they are not waiting for extreme periods of time. At their time slot or when called in, competitors will enter a room where a mock receptionist is located. The judging process begins once they enter the room. After the provided time, they will be called into an interview room.

Depending on the number of contestants registered, this contest may have a Preliminary Round and a Finals Round. This decision will be made prior to the conference starting and information regrading this will be posted in these updates. Contestants should prepare to compete on multiple days.

There is NO Contest Written Test for this competition. Competitors, with the exception of Middle School contestants, are required to complete the Professional Development Test.

Middle School competitors are exempt from all resume requirements and testing requirements.

If a demonstration requires a model, the competitor must supply their own, registered student model. Both the contestant and any model must follow the clothing requirements outlined in the Technical Standards and on the Conference webpage.

Material demonstrated must fall within the guidelines of the Technical Standards. If a contestant demonstrates an item that is deemed to be appropriate only for the Job Skill Demonstration Open, the contestant will be disqualified. If an advisor or contestant are not sure if they meet this threshold, they should contact the state director prior to submitting registration or prior to the conference.
